Bathtub Cleaning

Bathtub cleaning is a chore that most of us would love to forget about, but it is a necessary task.  And what you use to clean with, can make this chore a lot easier and better for your health…

Do you have a fiberglass tub or shower that needs cleaning? White vinegar can be heated until it is hot, but not boiling and pour into a spray bottle. Spray vinegar on your tub and shower walls, soaking them well.  Wait about 10 to 15 minutes and then use a scrubber sponge to scrub the tub and shower.  Dipping your sponge into a bucket with some vinegar.  Repeat with heated vinegar if needed.  Rinse and dry.

If your tub has a ‘dimpled’ floor, then you know how hard this can be to clean.  You can mix take 1 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup borax (this can be found with the laundry detergent) and pour it into a container that you can use to shake the powder out.   Sprinkle the mix on the tub floor, spray a light layer of water on the powder and then use a scrubber sponge to clean.  Add more water if needed.  Use this only on a plastic or fiberglass tub and shower.

To help make your tub and shower walls easier to clean and to help prevent mildew, apply some car wax to the walls.  After showering, use a squeegee to dry the shower walls and doors.  Make sure you do NOT get the wax on the tub floor.  It will be very slippery and could be dangerous.

For a procelain tub you will want to make a paste of powdered alum (or borax) and water.  Alum can be found at drugstores.  Use the paste as you would any other cleaner.

For stubborn stains you will want to make a paste using alum and lemon juice.  Rub the paste over the stain and let it dry.  Once dry use more lemon juice to moisten the dried paste and scrub.  Rinse completely.
