The Flu – Home Remedies

Easing the symptoms of the flu can be easy with these basic tips for using things around the house.

Eating yogurt can help fight different types of viral infections.  So just before the flu season starts, get out the yogurt and eat some each day to help your immune system produce the gamma interferon it needs to fight off the flu.

If you get the flu, here’s some tips to help with those body aches, sore nose and congestion.

  1. To help with body aches:  Fill a bathtub with warm water and add about 6 Alka Seltzers to the water.  Get in and soak those sore muscles away.   Do NOT do this if you are allergic to aspirin.
  2. To help with a stuffy or sore nose:   You’ve been blowing your nose and now it is all sore and red.  Rub some unflavored ChapStick on the sore areas to help them heal.  Just make sure you don’t use this ChapStick for your lips later on.  Or you can try chewing  a couple Altoids.  The peppermint helps clear up any congestion you might have.  A congested nose can also be opened up by eating some horseradish on a cracker.
  3. Headaches:  Rubbing some BenGay on the back of your neck, your temples and your forhead will help relive the headaches you tend to get from the flu.  The heat in the BenGay will help relax the muscles causing the headache.
  4. Chest Congestion:  Rub a generous amount of yellow mustard on your chest and cover with a warm, damp towel will help you breath easier.
